Robert Bertrum Kelly is an on-record architect for this theater which was constructed in 1926 with an exotic-theme picture, an impressive construction in the U.S. The theatre has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. It got closed in 1989 and reopened as a concert venue in August 2009. In September 2013, the Aztec theatre got leased and got transformed into a multi-purpose event center. It is an excellent venue for musical concerts along with public and private events. It is considered as a Meso-American architecture artwork.
The lobby has a 3-ton chandelier which is hailed as the largest in Texas to date. The three popular retail shops included in the theatre are, the Rio San Antonio Cruises (entertaining river cruises narrating the history of San Antonio River), Iron Cactus Mexican Grill, and Agava Bar (one of the top ten tequila bars in the United States).
