Washington Capitals Information
The Washington Capitals (also known as the Caps) are a professional ice hockey team based in Washington, D.C. The Capitals played their home games at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, from 1974 to 1997. In 1997 the team moved to the arena now called Capital One Arena , which is their present home arena in Washington, D.C. The Washington Capitals had its first winning record and a playoff berth in the 1982 -1983 season. It is part of the Metropolitan Division of the NHL’s Eastern Conference.
For the 1974–1975 season, the Caps joined the NHL as an expansion team. Abe Pollin owned the team. On June 22, 2007, the Capitals unveiled new uniforms. The change marked a return to the red, white, and blue color scheme used initially from 1974 to 1995.
From 2009 to 2010, Capitals won the franchise's first Presidents' Trophy for being the team with the most points at the end of the regular season. Some other notable awards and trophies earned by the team include Jack Adams Award ( 1983–84, 2007–08, 2015–16), NHL All-Star Team, King Clancy Memorial Trophy (2005–06), Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (2007–08, 2008–09, 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16, 2017–18, 2018–19), Prince of Wales Trophy (1997–98, 2017–18), and Stanley Cup (2017–18).
The Caps have provided some well-known Hall of Famers in its history, including Sergei Fedorov, Gartner, Oates, Stevens, Langway, Murphy, and Phil Housley. Some of the records made by the team include; Most goals in a season by Alexander Ovechkin, 65 (2007–08), Kevin Hatcher, 34 (1992–93), Peter Bondra, and others.
