Elf the musical is based on Elf the movie which released in 2003. Will Farrell made ELF one of the funniest Holiday movies of all time. The basic storyline in the musical remains similar to the film with a few changes here and there. For instance, the narrator in the musical is not Papa Elf but Santa Claus instead. A young boy named William Hobbs is an orphan who gets lost in Santa’s bag of gifts and mistakenly gets transported to the North Pole. After being discovered by Santa Claus and the other elves, they decide to bring up William as an elf. Growing up he realizes he is a human kid and goes out in search of his birth father Walter Hobbs in New York City, at Santa’s prompting. The story of elf the musical unfolds with Buddy realizing his father is in the “naughty” list and his other child Micheal does not even believe in Santa. He strives to win them over and make the people of New York City realize the true meaning of Christmas.
Mathew Sclar and Chad Beguelin gave the score for the musical and the book is adapted by Bob Martin and Thomas Meehan from the movie. It was performed on Broadway in the years 2010-11 and 2012-13 during the Christmas season. They also toured in 2012, and a new tour began in 2014.
