The Great Society Information
The Great Society is a rock band formed in the 60s in San Francisco, California. It was riding on the rising wave of acid rock in the Bay Area at the time. The initial band members included Grace Slick, the model-turned singer, alongside her then-husband Jerry Slick who played the drums, Slick’s brother Darby Slick on the guitar, and David Miner on the guitar and vocals.
The couple Jerry and Gracy Slick were so impressed by The Beatles that they went out to form their own rock band The Great Society. After lining up other members, the band’s debut was at the Coffee Gallery in North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco on October 15, 1965.
In the band’s lifetime, they only released one single Someone to Love. That was released in February 1966 under the Autumn Records and went on to reach No.5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their beginnings were what you would term ‘rough start’ with their big break coming much later when they began opening for other local bands like the Jefferson Airplane. From such openings, they landed a contract with the Columbia Records, but the band had disbanded by the time the mail from the label reached them. On her own, Grace released another single White Rabbit for Surrealistic Pillow, which went on to reach No.8 on Billboard Hot 100.
The rock band The Great Society reached its musical heights in the 1960s mainly riding on the fame of the term used by the then U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. To catch a performance of their live and on-stage, grab your tickets at TicketsOnSale.com.
