Alison Maria Krauss, or as she is popularly known by the stage name Alison Krauss, is an American bluegrass-country musician. Born in Decatur, Illinois, Alison grew up in the college town of Champaign, where she took part and won some of the local singing competitions from as early as when she was 10-years-old.
Alison did her first official recording at the age of 14 when she was signed up by Rounder Records in 1985. She later released her first solo album in 1987, after which, she was invited to join the bank Alison Krauss and Union Station, where she stills performs. She released her first album with the band in 1989.
Over her musical career, Alison Krauss has released a total of 14 albums, has been featured on many soundtracks, and has reinvigorated the love for bluegrass music across the U.S. Her cover of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? The soundtrack is said to have renewed Americans’ interest in bluegrass music. Her cover of the Cold Mountain soundtrack let to her selection to perform at the 2004 Academy Awards.
Over the years, Alison has bagged 42 Grammy Awards nominations, from which she has won 27. She comes third place after Quincy Jones and Georg Solti in the list of artists with the most Grammy Awards wins; she is also the most awarded female artist and most awarded singer in the history of the Grammy Awards.
