The venue was inaugurated for the public on August 21, 1971, with a construction cost of $24 million. The Coliseum is under the ownership of the City of Richmond, Virginia while SMG operates it.
The arena is primarily used for large concerts. Vincent G. Kling and Associates designed the architecture of the venue. Currently, the arena is home to Arena Racing USA. It was considered to be the largest sports arena in Virginia when inaugurated. The arena hosts a variety of events such as concerts, wrestling, sports events, bull riding, political events, and much more.
The Coliseum served host to several sports events including the Southern Conference men's basketball tournaments, The Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament, The Colonial Athletic Association men's (NCAA) collegiate basketball tournament along with Women's NCAA Division I Basketball Championship, the men's NCAA Tournament 1st and second rounds, and several more.
It also regularly hosts professional wrestling such as fifteenth WWF In Your House 15: A Cold Day in Hell, WWE Armageddon, 2010 WWE Draft, WWE Friday Night SmackDown, Monday Night Raw, etc. Some famous artists who performed at the arena include Elvis Presley. It also has been warm host to Professional Bull Riders, Bud Light Cup Series; Lane Frost Memorial and a rally for presidential candidate Barack Obama along with the 2009 Republican Party of Virginia convention.
