West Side Story Information
West Side Story is a 1961 musical romantic drama, which is an adaptation of a 1957 Broadway musical with the same name and inspired by Romeo and Juliet play by the famous English poet William Shakespeare.
It was first released on October 18, 1961, and went on to elicit strong reactions from viewers and critics. It rose to No. 2 most grossing film across the U.S. for that year. Earning it 11 nominations in the Academy Awards; winning ten including the Best Picture category and holding the record for a musical with the most wins.
The U.S. Library of Congress has deemed West Side Story a “culturally significant” film, and in 1997 was selected for the National Film Registry. Robert Wise was hand-picked to direct and produce the musical based on his experience with the urban New York dramas like Odds Against Tomorrow film released in 1959.
However, Wise had no experience in producing musical, so Jerome Robbins was selected, given he had already directed the stage version of the West Side Story. But after about covering 25% of the musical, The Mirisch Company was concerned that the production were way over-budget and thus dismissed Robbins. They had Robbins’ assistants continue with the productions but later roped in Robert Wise, who felt compelled to include Jerome Robbins as a co-director.
