The Illusionists Information
The Illusionist is an American romantic mystery released in 2006, which was written and directed by Neil Burger. It stars Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti and Edward Norton. The film is loosely based on the short story "Eisenheim the Illusionist" by Steven Milhauser from his 1990 collection called “The Barnum Museum”. The Illusionist depicts the story of Eisenheim, a magician from Vienna, who reunites with the love of his life, a woman far above his social status. The Illusionist also depicts a fictionalized version of the Mayerling Incident (The Mayerling Incident is a series of events surrounding the murder-suicide of the Crown Prince of Austria and his lover). The film premiered very impressively at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006. It also opened the Seattle International Film Festival in 2006.
The film begins in ‘medias res’ i.e. in the middle of the plot, as the Chief Inspector Walter Uhl of the Vienna Police recounts the history of Eisenheim, which is followed by the arrest of Eisenheim during a magic show which appears to be necromancy. The Illusionist ends with Eisenheim and his childhood lover Sophie, starting a new life together in a cabin at the bottom of a beautiful mountain. The Illusionist was a critical and commercial success. The Illusionist was among the three movies to traverse the world of magicians, the other two being “The Prestige” and “Scoop”.
