Cheech and Chong are a comedy duo that hit commercial and cultural success in the comedy industry back in the 70s and 80s with their rib-cracking stand-ups jokes, studio recordings, and feature films. The Grammy Award winners, Cheech and Chong, had joke materials revolving around the hippie culture, counterculture movements, free love era and their love for getting high, particularly on cannabis.
The pair was made up by Richard “Cheech” Marin, a US-citizen from Southern California and Tommy Chong, a Canadian citizen who met in Vancouver in the late 60s. The duo went on to produce hilarious and successful comedy record albums and even got roles in several low-budget films including the Up in Smoke released in 1978.
The film went on to become somewhat a cult classic and so successful at the box office it raked in more than $44 million; which is no small feat, considering it was a low-budget film. The film was later followed up by two sequels: Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie in 1980 and Nice Dreams in 1981.
Some of their most outstanding comedy routines and songs include ‘Sister Mary Elephant, Basketball Jones, Earache My Eye,’ and ‘Santa Claus and His Old Lady.’ They were also best known for the line “Dave’s not here,” from their debut album. Their most recent film release feature was Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie released in 2014.
