Keith Sweat Information
Keith Douglas Sweat is a 58-year-old American R&B singer and songwriter originally from Harlem, New York. Keith has captivated fans with his ‘whining’ voice. Interestingly, his working life began as a night stock boy at a Macy’s Department Store, before moving on to becoming a mailroom clerk at the Paine Webber brokerage firm. Over the course of four years, Keith worked his way up to becoming a brokerage assistant on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. He also went on to become a New York Mercantile Exchange supervisor.
Keith Sweat’s Music Career
In 1975, Keith joined the Harlem band called Jamilah, where he started working on his vocals as a lead singer performing across New York (NY), New Jersey, and Connecticut. He left the group in 1984 to embark on his solo career and started singing in nightclubs across NY City, and that is how he came across Stadium records, an independent label that signed him up.
He released two singles, Lucky Seven and My Mind Is Made Up. In 1987, he was discovered by Vincent Davis and signed up to his Vintertainment Records label. After which Keith released his debut solo studio album Make It Last Forever, which sold over three million copies. The album’s single I Want Her was the biggest hit and got nominated for the 1989 Soul Train Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Song of the Year award. The title album made it to No.2 on the R&B charts.
In 1980, Keith released his second album; I’ll Give All My Love to You, which made it to No.6 on the Billboard 200 chart. He followed that up with a third album Keep It Comin in 1991, which made it to the top 20 album chart countdown.
In 1992, he helped the group Silk craft their debut album Lose Control, which made it to No.7 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The single Freak Me from the album made it to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 1 1993.
