Cher Information
Cherilyn Sarkisian, or as popularly known Cher is an American singer, actress, and TV host. During her prime years in the music industry, she was nicknamed the Goddess of Pop by the media after successfully navigating through the male-dominated music industry.
With a six-decade-long career in the music industry, Cher dazzled fans with her distinctive contralto singing voice. She first popped up on the international music radar with the 1965 release ‘I Got You Babe,’ which was a duo release; Cher and her husband Sonny Bono. The song rose to the No.1 spot in both the American and British charts. Selling 40 million records globally, and skyrocketing the couple’s popularity. They were referred to as the rock’s ‘it’ couple by the Time magazine.
Cher’s solo career somewhat began in 1966, though she was still releasing songs as a duo group with her husband. Her first solo release ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’ went platinum giving her solo career more confidence. By the 70s she was a TV personality to reckon with, hosting several shows such as ‘The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.’ A show that had over 30 million viewers per week throughout its three-year-long run.
She topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts with singles like ‘Dark Lady, Half-Breed, Gypsys, and Tramps & Thieves.’ In 1975, she got divorced from her husband Sonny, and in 1979 made a musical comeback by launching the Take Me Home album, which earned her $300,000 weekly from 1980 to 1982 in concert residency in Las Vegas.
To date, Cher has sold over 100 million records worldwide and bagged several awards including a Grammy Award, Emmy Award, Academy Award, Cannes Film Festival Award, Kennedy Center Honors Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Cher is without a doubt one of the best-selling music artists in modern history; she is the only artist to have a number-one single on the Billboard chart for six consecutive decades (the 1960s through to 2010s).
