The venue was opened to the public on August 18, 1994, with a construction cost of $175 million. It underwent major renovations in the year 2014 and 2016-17. The arena is designed by the Marmon Mok, Populous (then HOK Sport), and W. E. Simpson Company, Inc. It is home to the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL) and Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The arena was named in honor of its corporate sponsor, United Airlines.

The first event that took place at this venue was the United Center was the WWF SummerSlam. It also played host to the 1996 Democratic National Convention. It is the largest arena in the USA by size. The venue hosts above 200 events every year and enjoyed the presence of over 20 million visitors since its opening.
