The venue is under the ownership of the Hennepin Theatre Trust and operated by the Historic Theatre Group. The theatre is one of the four restored theaters on Hennepin Avenue including the State Theatre, Pantages Theatre, and the Shubert Theatre. It was initially known by the name of the Hennepin Theater. The theatre premiered many musicals including The 101 Dalmatians Musical and the Lion King.

The architectural style of the venue is Beaux-Arts, which was designed by Kirchoff, Roger; et al. The theatre underwent renovations in 1993 and was reopened in the same year.
