Opened on August 2, 1913, the Capitol Theatre has been a great center of attraction to the Arts community of downtown Salt Lake City. It was designed by Albert G. Lansburgh as a part of the Orpheum Theatre chain. The architect of this theatre was ahead of its times, which includes modern mechanical contrivances with advanced security features such as earthquake resistant, fireproof, and air conditioning. Capitol Theatre building was remodeled in 1927 and movie with was featured here first is Bebe Daniels in “Swim Girl, Swim along with Wurlitzer organ, plus Alberti & His Band and Fanchon & Marco stage show “Screens Idea. Till the early 1940s, it was operated by Paramount Pictures. In 1976. Salt Lake City-County purchased Capitol Theatre and restored it to its original form.
Today, Capitol Theatre hosts events like Utah Opera, Ballet West, and Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. Additionally, it also organized world-class Broadway productions community arts education programs. With rich architectural features and a history of successful events, Capitol theatre has become a treasured historic landmark. With newly upgrades, such a remodeled lobby enhanced seating, a new orchestra pit, the Capitol Theatre building is a part of the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre.
