Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles - Los Angeles CA
Robin Trower
The Orpheum Theatre is part of a chain of vaudeville and movie theatres which is located at Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The venue is owned by Anjac Fashion Building, a theatrical production company owned by Steeve Needleman. The Orpheum Theatre was opened to the general public on February 15, 1926, with a seating capacity of 2,203 as the fourth and final Los Angeles venue for the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. After a $3 million renovation, it reopened in 1989, and now it is the most restored historical movie place in the city.
The Orpheum Theatres are named after the Greek mythological figure, Orpheus. The Orpheum has a Beaux-Arts facade designed architecture by a movie theater architect G. Albert Lansburgh. The theater also has a Mighty Wurlitzer organ, that was installed in 1928. It is one of three pipe organs remaining in Southern California venues. Soon after the inauguration, the theater was a popular site for burlesque queen Sally Rand, the Marx Brothers, Will Rogers, Judy Garland (singing with her family as Frances "Baby" Gumm) and comedian Jack Benny, as well as jazz greats Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington. In the 1960s, the theatre held rock 'n' roll concerts featured by Little Richards, Little Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin. Vaudeville acts were still playing the Orpheum as late as 1950. The restored Orpheum Theatre now serves as the venue for live concerts, movie premieres, and location shoots.
