The Mahalia Jackson Theatre is an art performance theatre and is located at 1419 Basin Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. It serves home to the New Orleans Opera Association, New Orleans Ballet Association and the Broadway Across America touring productions. The venue has a seating capacity of 2,100. It was inaugurated in January 1973. Itis owned and operated by Ambassador Theatre Group. The architecture of the theater was designed by William Bergman.
After Hurricane Katrina (August 2005), the venue suffered severe wind and water damage. It underwent renovations in 2009 with a cost of around US$27 million.
New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra was the very first performance held at the theatre. The three-night concert by Diana Ross in 1996 is considered as the successful pop concerts in the history of Mahalia Jackson. Famous performers of the fine arts such as Brass bands, Gospel and Jazz singers also performed here. At the reopening ceremony of the venue, some other well-known artists gave their live performances including Irma Thomas, Marva Wright Kermit Ruffins. The 2012 NFL Honors hosted in the theatre. Popular Disney movie “THE LION KING” was also played at the theatre from 14th March 2012 to 15th April 2012.
