The architecture of the stadium is designed by HKS, Inc., and Vikings Stadium Consortium (Studio Hive, Studio Five & Lawal Scott Erickson Architects Inc.). The stadium is the first venue to have a fixed roof built in the NFL.

The stadium hosts a variety of events including football, basketball, concerts, religious events, etc. It hosted the Super Bowl LII in 2018, ESPN X Games, NCAA Final Four, the United States women's national soccer team also played a game here, and many others. The venue also served host to popular artists who performed concerts here including Luke Bryan, Metallica, Prince, Guns N' Roses, U2, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Garth Brooks, and a few others. The LCMS Youth Gathering was also hosted by the stadium from July 11–15, 2019, as a religious event. The venue is expected to host the 2020 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
