The Golden Gate Theatre is located at 1 Taylor Street, San Francisco, California, USA. This venue is a performance venue which was inaugurated as a vaudeville on March 26, 1922. It was later converted to a major movie theater. It has a seating capacity of 2,297. The venue is under the ownership of SHN. The theater was inaugurated with 7 vaudeville act's performance appearance at the opening night. G. Albert Lansburgh (RKO) designed the architecture of the venue. After the restoration period, the theater reopened as a performing arts venue in the year 1979.
The very first event that took place was the performance known as A Chorus Line. The venue also featured many Broadway shows including Hairspray, Mamma Mia!, Sweeney Todd, etc. The theater also had the preview engagement of Legally Blonde: The Musical (before it went to Broadway), Cabaret, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, etc. It also staged a national touring company production of Fiddler on the Roof. WeWork officially opened its second San Francisco location on the six floors above the theater on June 27, 2013.
