The stadium was inaugurated on August 24, 2002, being the first NFL facility to have a retractable roof. The construction cost of this stadium was $352 million. The stadium is home to many of the United States men's national soccer team's matches, the National Football League's Houston Texans, the Texas Bowl, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The stadium was closed and got reopened on October 5, 2008.

The stadium hosted its first regular-season NFL football game on September 8, 2002. In February 2003, the first rodeo was held at this venue.
