The Peabody Opera House, also known as the Stiefel Theatre and originally the Municipal Opera House while formerly as the Kiel Opera House, is a civic performing arts building. This building is located at 1400 Market, St. Louis, MO. The venue has a seating capacity of 3,100. It opened to the public on July 12, 2010, with a construction cost of $79 million. LaBeaume and Klein designed the architecture of the theater.
The Peabody Opera House is a renovated form of the original venue which is named after the company Peabody Energy. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 11, 2000. It underwent many closings and openings until a stable state was achieved in 2011.
The inauguration ceremony of the opera house took place with featured personalities such as Jay Leno, Aretha Franklin, and Chuck Berry. The opening was attended by 3, 100 attendees which resulted in full-house. The venue hosted many notable musical events including performances by Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Johnny Carson, etc. The Rolling Stones also performed at the venue where Bill Graham was the tour promoter.
