Hershey Theatre is located in downtown Hershey, Pennsylvania which is the area's premier performing arts center. It hosts classical music and dance attractions, Broadway shows, and world-renowned entertainers. It was opened to the public on September 1933. The theater was a part of Hershey's Great Building Campaign of the Depression.
The seating capacity of the Hershey Theatre is 1904. It owes its presence to chocolate tycoon and philanthropist Milton S. Hershey. It has a beautiful architecture. It has a grand lobby on which floor is made of polished Italian lava rock, to shape the walls, four different types of marble are used. The ceiling has bas-relief images of beehives, sheaves of wheat, swans, Apollo and Assyrian war chariots, pastoral scenes, etc. In addition to this, it has a beautiful blue and gold pin-point mosaic design which leads to the main floor seating area.
The Hershey Theater also features a stereopticon machine; an 18-inch round disc etched with images of small clouds, the light from 1,000-watt bulb projects through the disc. Its stage measures 44' from the apron to the back wall and 75' from wall to wall. There are five elevators, 18' x 44'-6" steel frame movie screen and 44 counter-weighted lines for sets and lights. There is also a complete house sound system, a sophisticated lighting system with three super trouper spotlights, and an infrared listening system.
